NLTG can help you hire a Retail apprentice in Southport

Hiring the wrong person for the job is every employer’s worst nightmare. It’s not impossible that as a Southport employer, you’ve experienced the disappointment of budget wasted on advertising, time spent in interviews and perhaps duplication of effort as you redo the tasks your new recruit was supposed to be capable of. Even worse, hiring a candidate with a mismatched skill set can create issues in the workplace, uncomfortable conversations and the opportunity cost of having the right person do the job in the right way.

Hiring an apprentice can be an effective and powerful way to avoid the risks associated with misleading applications or poor organisational culture fit in the workplace. When recruiting an apprentice, rather, your company is gaining a valuable asset with a genuine interest in learning more about your Southport business, the industry you operate in and “the way things are done around here”. If your company has any customer-facing element to it whatsoever, it can be significantly advantageous to consider recruiting a Retail apprentice who may be flexibly trained to meet the specific and unique needs of your Southport organisation.

NLTG has been providing Southport employers with quick to learn Level 2 Retail apprentices who are ready, willing and more than able to make a significant positive impact on your business profitability and efficiency. While they gain invaluable skills working in your company, an NLTG Retail apprentice can help increase your organisation’s productivity and free up your existing staff to focus on their higher-level tasks. This effect may be especially appreciated if your company, like other NLTG employers, requires an apprentice to help handle the rapid change of pace while growing and expanding.

As an employer, you may also have heard that hiring an apprentice costs a lot of money and can damage your bottom line. This couldn’t be further from the truth! In fact, studies have shown that UK employer and business owners are generally able to recoup the costs of their apprenticeship investments in a relatively short period of time. It’s also possible to enjoy further gains when recruiting an apprentice because the government can often cover the cost of funding for apprenticeships. On top of this, employers are often entitled to incentive financial payments of £1,000 per apprentice hired.

A Level 2 retail apprentice can begin creating value for your business instantly, and these apprentices are generally quick and hungry to learn retail skills including, but not limited to,  tasks like stocktaking, payment processing and assisting customers directly. Retail apprentices are often aspiring Visual Merchandisers, Counter Assistants, Stockroom Assistants and Sales Assistants, on top of their existing abilities. This means they are often particularly rapid to learn about how your business operates, understand it’s unique selling points and how to expand your client base.

At NLTG, we help facilitate travel cost and time reduction by delivering apprentice and existing employee training within your current workplace. Furthermore, we provide a talented supply of Southport apprentices from a diverse range of industries. We are able to help you recruit fresh apprentices in other fields besides retail, or train your existing staff across the fields of: Business Administration, Information Technology, Customer Service, Catering and Hospitality, General Manufacturing, Furniture Occupations, Glass Occupations, Team Leading and Management, and Warehouse and Logistics.

NLTG provide training in the Southport area for your current employees

Recruiting fresh apprentices from a variety of fields is one great way for Southport companies to acquire talent. However, it’s equally important to ensure that your organisation is staying up to date with modern industry and technological requirements to create a powerfully engaging and lasting retail experience for your customers.

Cash registers have been replaced by tablets while ordering, and online shopping has reached a new level of importance- industry best practice is changing all the time! While your existing employees may be able and talented, it’s often the case that they’ll welcome the chance to upgrade or update their skills in a meaningful way that doesn’t take them too far from the workplace. NLTG offers apprenticeships for your eligible current workforce too, which can provide them with a valuable chance to upskill on the job and boost their job satisfaction. Also as with recruiting new apprentices, NLTG’s upskilling training services are free from travel costs, saving lost working hours!

What training do I need to provide?

You will need to train a new apprentice in their job role and provide them with a mentor, as you would with any new member of staff.  The apprentice however, may need a little more support, especially if they have not worked in your industry before or are learning a new role.

We will visit your premises every 4 to 6 weeks to help with the training and guide your apprentice through their programme.

Apprentices are employees of your company and you are responsible for paying your apprentice’s wage.  You must pay at least the Apprenticeship minimum wage and can find out more by clicking here.  The Apprenticeship minimum wage relates to apprentices aged 16 to 18, or aged 19 and above in the first year of their Apprenticeship.

For apprentices aged under 25, you may not need to pay National Insurance contributions during their training.  Find out more by clicking here.

Apprentices are employees of your company, with the same rights and responsibilities as any other employee.

As such, you will decide the days and hours you would like apprentices to work (which must be at least 30 hours per week), their rest breaks and paid holiday entitlement etc, in line with Employment Law and the Working Hours Directive.

If you employ an apprentice aged under 18, the law states that they must not work more than 8 hours per day or 40 hours per week.  They are also entitled to paid holidays and rest breaks of at least 30 minutes if their shift lasts more than four and half hours.

They are handled like any other employee’s, but NLTG are on hand to provide help and support if you feel it is necessary.

If your apprentice is aged:

• 16-18; or

• 19-24 and is a care leaver or has a Local Authority Education, Health & Care Plan
