Overview

The furniture, furnishings and interiors industry is of significant importance to the UK economy, particularly in the supply of end products for residential and commercial living and workplaces.

It offers a vast range of career opportunities for those with an eye for detail and a creative mind. Depending on the product and company size, upholsterers, sewing machinists or materials cutters may work alone or as part of team.

Learners will develop different skills depending upon their area of specialism. For example, upholsterers may create comfortable and eye-catching furniture, products and items using traditional and modern techniques, materials, and fabrics. Sewing machinists will undertake pattern making, sample making, cutting, and sewing using a variety of materials, threads, and trimmings. Material cutters work in the manufacturing sector in the production of items such as handbags, shoes, clothing, tents, industrial textiles, and numerous home wear products.
