If you’re a ‘people person’, have good communication skills and are keen to work in a fast-paced industry, then the retail sector is for you.
You’ll work directly with a wide range of customers, putting them at ease and supporting them make purchase decisions about products or services. Depending on your role, you could be involved with: in-store or on-line promotions; ensuring product displays are attractive and appealing to customers; stock control; supporting team members; and using appropriate technology, including social and digital media, to support the sale of products or services.
You could work in settings such as a shop or other retail establishment (for example a large high street chain, small boutique, supermarket or department store), or for a specialist retailer (such as a garden centre or delicatessen); or even in a ‘remote’ environment working in telephone, on-line and mail order retail.
You’ll receive real-life training from experienced staff within your workplace, and be visited regularly by a specialist NLTG Tutor. Your Tutor will support and guide you throughout your Apprenticeship, making sure you develop the skills needed for your job role. As part of your Apprenticeship, you will need to complete a maths and/or English qualification at Level 1 (e.g. GCSE Grade D/3 equivalent) if you do not already have these qualifications. Your NLTG Tutor will provide you with support and guidance.
• All vacancies are jobs from day one.
• Your training will lead to a nationally recognised qualification.
• You will receive an attractive wage/salary during training.
• We have a dedicated team to support you with your English and maths skills.
• We operate an equality and diversity policy.
• All employers are appraised for health and safety.
• We will visit you regularly during your training.
• Your training will be full and varied.
I have worked at Ted Carter for eight years and my job role is a Shop Assistant/Coarse Fishing Expert. My duties include serving customers, dealing with their queries and telephone enquiries, stock replenishment and assisting with ordering stock. The qualifications I have achieved through NLTG so far are Level 2 NVQ in Customer Service, Functional Skills Level 1 in Maths and English and I am just about to complete my Retail apprenticeship where I will achieve a Level 2 NVQ in Retail Skills. If I was asked to explain to school leavers the benefits of apprenticeships, I would tell them to take what’s available to broaden their skills. Don’t be shy of doing apprenticeships and thinking they might not get you anywhere because in my opinion, they are exactly what potential employers are looking for these days.
