Case Study – Pierce Chartered Accountants LTD

"Apprenticeships work!"

Company Profile

Pierce is an award-winning business advisory and accountancy group based in Blackburn, Lancashire. Since 1929 the firm’s core value has been its client-focussed culture, reflected in the fact that 80 per cent of clients are longstanding. At Pierce they are honoured to have represented hundreds of businesses from their initial founding through acquisitions and expansion, and often to sale or succession. The quality of their work has regularly been recognised by the region’s business community. They have won awards, but the most important reward for everyone at Pierce is receiving recognition for their work from their clients, and watching their people grow.

From the Company

NLTG have been a client of Pierce’s for many years and we are now working alongside them, recruiting apprentices as needed.

Apprenticeships are ideal to train a young person for the role they are in and develop them on an ongoing basis. We have been able to train an individual to our business requirements. As a benefit to the young person, they gain the work experience and develop personal skills alongside the qualification.

We have taken on three Apprentices in total. One has achieved his Level 2 in Business Administration and has moved on to undertake other industry specific qualifications. Another has completed his Level 2 and 3 in IT and is moving on to a trainee accountant role.  The third young person is working towards his Level 2 in Business Administration as well.

Apprenticeships work! We have always felt that the Apprenticeship route will be a success but even more so now seeing the above employees progress. The introduction and opportunity of Higher Apprenticeships is also encouraging. It is great to see that our investment in Apprenticeships is paying off. We have apprentices who have worked their way into permanent positions and who are well established within the firm. A great workforce for the future.

We would definitely recommend NLTG to any business. They encourage and support both the employer and the apprentice in any way that they can.

Case Study - Phillip Johnson

Age: 21
Company: Pierce Chartered Accountants LTD
Job Role: Payroll Administrator

I first came across NLTG when I decided I wanted to do an Apprenticeship. At the time, I was working in a job with no progression and knew an Apprenticeship would give me more opportunities. I found NLTG online and decided to apply.

I started my Apprenticeship at Pierce Chartered Accountants in December 2013 as an Administration Apprentice in the payroll department. I have achieved my Level 2 Business Administration Apprenticeship through NLTG which gave me a good start. When I started at Pierce I had no experience working in an office and this qualification helped me get used to the change it also allowed Pierce to mould me into what they wanted as a team member.

I now work as a Payroll Administrator with 5 other members of our team, processing payrolls for 400 clients. I have achieved the CIPP Payroll Technician Certificate and am currently working towards the CIPP Foundation Degree in Payroll Management both paid for by the company. I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of the Foundation Degree and love applying what I have learnt to my day to day work.

I have always been happy to take on new training and responsibility. With my manager due off in April for maternity leave, I will be stepping up to the management role when she is off which will be a great challenge for me. I hope to progress in the Payroll department and maybe one day reach a permanent management role.

I would advise school leavers to seriously consider Apprenticeships. They are a brilliant way to start a career. You can earn whilst you learn and also develop important life skills.
