Courses for the unemployed

Looking for a pathway to your dream career?

If you are unemployed we offer short courses, in conjunction with Job Centre Plus, aimed at improving your prospects of securing employment.

What are adult learning courses for Lancashire job seekers?

NLTG work in partnership with Jobcentre Plus to provide a variety of free short courses to help those aged 19+ who are claiming benefits and seeking employment. The courses are aimed at teaching new skills and knowledge in different occupational areas, in line with current local demand and vacancies.

What courses are available and are they certified?

We currently offer courses in IT, Employability Skills, Hospitality, Furniture Manufacturing, Retail/Customer Service, Health and Safety, Food Safety, Maths and English. You will work towards a nationally recognised qualification.

Who are the courses for?

They are for all adults aged 19+ who are currently claiming benefits through Jobcentre Plus.

Will I get paid during the course? Will it affect my benefits?

No you won’t get paid for doing the course however you can still claim your benefits.

How long do the courses last?

That depends on which course you are doing. They range from 1 day up to 20 days and are available at regular intervals throughout the year.

Is there any opportunity for progression?

Yes, however, due to funding you are limited to 2 courses per academic year with an English/maths course on top. The ultimate purpose of the courses however is for you to progress into a job or possibly a Traineeship/Apprenticeship.

Will I receive any support with travel expenses?

You are best speaking to your Jobcentre Plus Work Coach who will be able to help you further with this matter.

Are there any entry requirements?

The only entry requirements are a basic level of maths and English which will be further developed on the courses.

Case Study – Emma Bibby

“ During the first week I was invited to have an interview for a full-time vacancy in the ASET Team (Apprenticeship Service Engagement Team). I was successful and started the job the following week. I could not believe how quickly my circumstances had changed. I was so happy and could not wait to start.”
