As a food production and cooking apprentice you’ll work with a team of people. The type of foods you cook and produce will vary depending on where you work, which may be in a restaurant, hotel, care home, school, pub, café or fast food outlet.

You’ll learn a range of skills and techniques and take responsibility for your own area of production, which could change on a daily basis. You’ll study mandatory units in health and safety, teamwork and food safety and will then choose from a variety of optional units which cover different areas of food production and cooking. Your main duties will typically include: cooking pre-prepared food; chilling and freezing food to be cooked at a later date; stock ordering and organising stockrooms; ensuring you maintain a clean and efficient working environment.
