Do you have a passion to work in the construction industry? Do you enjoy practical, hands on work? Then a Carpentry or Joinery Apprenticeship is for you. As a carpenter or joiner you will work on building sites or in workshops, depending on which role you choose.
Joiners are mostly based in workshops and use a range of woodworking tools and machinery. They often produce timber based building components and other architectural products that are then installed by site carpenters.
Site Carpenters are mostly based on site, fitting the products into buildings. This may be early on in construction, such as fitting floorboards and staircases, or towards the end of contruction, such as installing doors and skirting boards.
As an apprentice, you will receive comprehensive training in a variety of skills and work in a highly practical job under the guidance of an experienced carpenter or joiner. Your training will also cover the use of hand tools such as saws, hammers, chisels, and power tools including drills and jigsaws. It may be that your training as a carpenter or joiner involves travel to different locations, especially building sites and homes.
Day release to a local college is required on a weekly basis as part of the Apprenticeship.
You’ll receive real-life training from experienced staff within your workplace, and be visited regularly by a specialist NLTG Tutor. Your Tutor will support and guide you throughout your Apprenticeship, making sure you develop the skills needed for your job role. As part of your Apprenticeship, you will need to complete a maths and/or English qualification if you do not already hold these qualifications; the level at which you will study will depend upon your Apprenticeship. You may also need to study an ICT qualification. Your NLTG Tutor will provide you with support and guidance.

• We will visit you regularly during your training.
• Your training will be full and varied.
I have gained a high level of skill as a Bench Joiner achieving levels 2 and 3. This has given me the confidence to develop to my full potential and has enabled me to work my way up within the company. I am now a team leader and look after a small team of Bench Joiners and Apprentices. My skills have given me the ability to produce a high standard of Bespoke Joinery products including spiral staircases, counters, doors and windows. Often these are for exclusive establishments. I was recently involved in manufacturing products for the Shard in London which was a very satisfying experience as I project managed the job from start to finish.
