Case Study – Crystal Elwell Apprenticeship at Sagar Insurances Name: Crystal Elwell – NLTG Apprentice of the Year 2015 Age: 19 Company: Sagar Insurances Job Role: Insurance Advisor Since when: 2014 What is your job role and what does that involve? I am a Trainee Insurance Advisor which involves the general administration duties of Insurance policies as well as producing a high level of service to new and existing clients. What qualifications have you gained during your Apprenticeship and what qualifications are you working towards at the moment? I have gained my Customer Service level 2 and I am not working towards my level 3 in Customer Service. How did you find out about Apprenticeships and why did you decide to undertake one? I attended Burnley College for 2 years to do my A levels but unfortunately I did not get the results I wanted. I knew a few Apprentices that worked at NLTG and they introduced me to all the different benefits of doing an Apprenticeships. I really liked the idea that I could earn a wage and learn in my full time permanent job. What do you enjoy most about doing your qualification? I enjoy understanding the customers journey in which I have to analyse them so we know the best option for our clients. I enjoying transferring the different skills I have learnt in my NVQ to help deliver a higher level of service to my clients. How has the Apprenticeship benefited you? What skills have you learned? I have learnt time management skills which help me throughout my working day and also I’ve learnt how to deal with difficult clients and situations and how to best handle them effectively. Have you progressed in the company? After achieving Apprentice of the Year with NLTG I have progressed within my career, which has helped me gain more confident within my job role and has helped me gain a new position in the Business team. What benefits has your employer seen? My employer has seen a positive contribution from my work as they have gained income through my new selling skills. They have also seen an increase in my confidence which has given me the push to apply for a new job role which I get thanks to my new skills. Has your attitude changed towards training? It hasn’t really changed towards Apprenticeship training as I have also enjoyed the hands on experience way of learning and it clearly suits me better. I have always been enthusiastic towards any training which can be seen thought out my Apprenticeship. What would you like to achieve in the future? I would love to continue progressing within my job role at Sagar Insurance and learn more about the technical side of insurance and complete my certificate in insurance. What would you advise school leavers about Apprenticeships? I would advise school leavers that Apprenticeships are not the ‘easy way out’ they are a beneficial qualification that give individuals the work experience to grow in working life and to progress within substantial companies.
