Case Study – Layton Smalley Traineeship at Pierce Chartered Accountants LTD Name: Layton Smalley Age: 18 Company: Pierce Chartered Accountants LTD Job Role: Business Administrator I found out about Traineeships through recommendations from friends currently on the programme. I didn’t like college and my friends made the Traineeship programme sound fun. I really wanted some form of work experience to help me get a job. As part of my Traineeship programme, I started work experience at Pierce Chartered Accountants doing all kinds of administration based activities in the payroll department. I achieved my Level 2 Certificate in Employability skills and was offered a full time Apprenticeship. I am now currently undertaking my Level 2 Business Administration qualification through NLTG. Still working in the payroll department, I undertake the administration duties such as sending out letters, getting the post, making phone calls, updating spreadsheets etc. however, the majority of my work involves helping the rest of the team with various payroll duties. Coming into work has made me feel like I am achieving something with my time and that I can get somewhere in my life. I have learnt skills such as how to use Microsoft Excel and have a good knowledge of payrolls, auto-enrolment and how to manually calculate national insurance and pension deductions. In the future, I would like to achieve my Level 2 Apprenticeship in Business Administration, move onto my Level 3 and also complete payroll courses and qualifications to move up in the team.
