Case Study – Katie Oldham Employabilty Route at Accrington Study Programme Name: Katie Oldham Age: 17 Route: Employability Work Placement: Café Amsterdam, Accrington Achieved: Employability Level 2 and Functional Skills Maths Level 1 Having achieved her employability qualification at NLTG, Katie quickly moved onto a work placement in Café Amsterdam. She thrived in her new role and after 7 weeks was offered an NLTG Apprenticeship in Front of House. Katie attended NLTG once a week to complete her Functional Skills Maths Level 1 qualification and was also chosen to take part in the Outward Bound initiative in Scotland, where she participated in teamwork and confidence building activities ranging from sea kayaking to abseiling down Glen Nevis! Katie said, “I’m really happy to be offered an Apprenticeship here, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity without work experience, it really built my confidence. I was eased into my new role and was given time to make sure the job was right for me. I’m happy to have gained my maths qualification and hope to continue working in the hospitality sector after completing my Apprenticeship.” June, Katie’s employer, described her as a ‘revelation’, explaining that as a small business, they had to make sure they employed the ‘right people to strengthen their team.’ Katie has also been nominated for a Student Achievement Award for her efforts.
