Have you been looking everywhere for the right staff for your firm? Finding a good fit for your company can be a challenge if you don’t know where to look. But shoppers, diners, and buyers are back in full force after over two years of uncertainty, and now’s the time to make up for lost sales and orders. If driven, talented new personnel are what your Accrington company needs, read on to find out why companies in Accrington should hire an apprentice in 2022!

Let’s start at the beginning—what is an apprentice? While apprenticeships have been around for many years, they’re starting to become much more popular with UK companies in all kinds of sectors. A new apprentice is generally an ambitious new who is passionate about building a career in your sector, and who is keen enough to head straight out into the workforce as soon as they’ve graduated from secondary school. When you hire a new apprentice, you gain a motivated employee that you can train in the specific niche of your choice, and who will help you create value as an employee from Day One on the job.

So why hire an apprentice over an experienced candidate? As you’ve probably guessed, one of the top reasons why companies in Accrington should hire an apprentice in 2022 is because apprentices can be truly productive employees. They’re motivated, quick to learn, and as we’ve seen, can be flexibly developed to take on any role that your company requires. That flexibility, ambition, and drive all make for a brilliantly high-performing new teammate!

Another reason why your Accrington business should consider an apprenticeship hiring pathway is because apprenticeships can potentially save your business a great deal of money. Apprentices begin on a relatively low starting wage, and gain essential experience by working with you. Over time, they can become dependable, high-performing employees who know your firm inside and out!

That’s not all, however—many organisations are even receiving generous government incentives for each new apprentice that they hire, depending on their eligibility. The apprenticeship hiring incentive is a payment of up to £1,000 that businesses can receive if they meet certain criteria, such as the age of their apprentice (16-18 years old) and the size of their firm (fewer than 50 employees). If you’re a solopreneur or smaller company, you could receive two payments directly to your company’s account for every new apprentice you hire if you are eligible. Not only do you gain a loyal, career-driven new employee, but you could also reinvest in scaling up your firm!

What training do I need to provide?

You will need to train a new apprentice in their job role and provide them with a mentor, as you would with any new member of staff.  The apprentice however, may need a little more support, especially if they have not worked in your industry before or are learning a new role.

Apprentices are employees of your company and you are responsible for paying your apprentice’s wage.  You must pay at least the Apprenticeship minimum wage and can find out more by clicking here.  The Apprenticeship minimum wage relates to apprentices aged 16 to 18, or aged 19 and above in the first year of their Apprenticeship.

What days and hours do apprentices work?

Apprentices are employees of your company, with the same rights and responsibilities as any other employee.

As such, you will decide the days and hours you would like apprentices to work (which must be at least 30 hours per week), their rest breaks and paid holiday entitlement etc, in line with Employment Law and the Working Hours Directive.

If you employ an apprentice aged under 18, the law states that they must not work more than 8 hours per day or 40 hours per week.  They are also entitled to paid holidays and rest breaks of at least 30 minutes if their shift lasts more than four and half hours.
