Vanessa Norris
Vanessa is 22 years old and has worked at Beldorm in Stoneclough near Bolton for 18 months. She began her NVQ in warehousing in November 2006. Vanessa asked her supervisor if she could work towards an apprenticeship after seeing the success of one of her colleagues. She wanted to take the opportunity to develop her own skills and learning and has now almost completed her qualification.
When asked what benefits Vanessa has found from working for a qualification she says, "I am now more organised and am better at my job. I have a better understanding of my job role and I'm much more aware of health and safety".
Vanessa has also benefited from the support of a Skills for Life Trainer whilst working for her apprenticeship. This has meant that she has had one-to-one support to improve her literacy and numeracy skills.
Vanessa says, "school gave up on me, but with Skills for Life you benefit from one-to-one support. I'm now more confident".
Vanessa has progressed and feels the benefit when doing her job. For example, she is more confident when using numeracy skills when stock-taking and picking orders. Her learning has also had benefits in ‘everyday life', her skills in handling money have improved and being able to calculate percentages has been useful when shopping in the sales!
Vanessa's supervisor, Alan Cordner, and the Operations Manager, Sam Bonnici, have been very supportive of her learning. Sam says, "I feel this has given her more focus. She is much more focused and is more enthusiastic".
