Matthew was recently crowned the Most Outstanding Young Tourism Manager of the Year 2009 at a glitzy presentation held at the Marine Hall in Fleetwood, Matthew was up against strong competition and was announced the winner on the night. Matthew was entered for the award by Donna Coleman his Training Officer who is currently working with him on his Level 3 Management in Food on an Advanced Apprenticeship.
Donna began working with Matthew 2 years ago and instantly saw potential in him. He enrolled onto the Apprenticeship and quickly grasped what was required. He understood the units and took on the role of cross referencing the evidence he had researched and produced to the NVQ standards. He took full control of his file and made the qualification his own, he fully understands the units. Matt was shining out as a supervisor and quickly got promoted to Assistant Manager. This is where he had more duties to carry out and more control of the restaurant, Matt continued to excel in his NVQ throughout all the changes and responsibilities at work. He created projects for each unit and researched the knowledge from other staff, internet, managers and produced an excellent file, he managed to sign off his first 2 units within 3 months of signing onto the programme. Matt is the only student within our centre to have progressed so quickly within his company and to have completed a level 3 unit whilst completing a level 2 qualification, he constantly encourages all of his staff to enrol in a qualification and show them what you can achieve.
When the Restaurant Manger changed department to take over the Food Hall it was a natural step to promote Matt to become Huntleys Restaurant Manager, although Matt was only 21 he stood up to the mark and took control of the restaurant and this means that he has to organise rotas, keeping within strict budgets, deal with staff complaints, issues, absences and ultimately deal with customer's queries and complaints. He organises and helps to run events ensuring budgets are maintained and profits are made. He has to carry out all the ordering, stock rotation and cashing up for the multi million pound company. The outstanding knowledge he has of his company helps him to keep the restaurant running daily with minimal disruptions, he has to keep stock well maintained and this involves dealing with multiple suppliers and predicting what will be sold. He has to organise all the staff where they are working and ensure that he constantly moves them around so they are multi skilled, while still running an effective business. Matt's other talent is to create all the advertising leaflets, posters and labels for the restaurant and the food hall.
Matt constantly thinks outside the box, he is always after a new challenge and wanting to make things better for his staff and the company. Matt is an outstanding learner who never seems to amaze me with his ideas and abilities and progression within his company. Matt is a young lad who will become very successful in his working life, I feel that the opportunity of becoming a Manager has helped him regain some focus in his life, he now has a goal and can see his goal becoming a reality.
Matt says that winning the awards was unbelievable, it is great to know that my hard work has been recognised.
Huntley says We are so very proud of Matt and wish him all the best in his ever improving career path!
Donna states that she always new Matt had potential and is so very proud of all he has achieved, he has travelled a long road and sometimes it has been very tough, this is the thank you that he truly deserves, well done Matt.
