Shaun Murphy visits new centre

Former World and UK Snooker Champion, Shaun Murphy, visited the Vocational Centre of Excellence in July. Shaun was in East Lancashire in his capacity as an ambassador for the Paul Hunter Foundation - one of many good causes NLTG support each year.

Shaun toured the building situated in the Old Bakery, Grange Lane, Accrington and then played snooker with youngsters from NLTG’s Foundation Learning Programme.

The programme aims to equip youngsters with the skills and knowledge to move into an Apprenticeship or job. Murphy said “It’s great to visit Accrington again and, in particular, facilities like these. "It’s also a pleasure to see my sport being used not only to engage young people but as part of their daily activities in learning English and maths. I think what’s also good about the programme is the work ethic that’s instilled into the young people.”

Chris Lovell, NLTG’s Foundation Learning Manager said, “A fundamental part of our programme is to deliver an inclusive approach to learning at post 16 by bringing the young people from our sub centres in Oldham, Preston, Blackpool and Fleetwood to our main centre in Accrington. Many youngsters never get the opportunity to visit other towns or cities. We see this as a key part of their development.”
