Foundation Learning

Foundation Learning is the exciting learning programme tailored to suit the needs of young people aged 16-18. It aims to help young people who are not yet ready, or able, to directly enter employment or an Apprenticeship.

NLTG offers every person the best possible support in order to assist them in laying the foundations for the rest of their life. Foundation Learning offers an initial induction and assessment period followed by sessions in: job club, hairdressing, retail, business administration, construction, communication skills, first aid, physical activities, food hygiene, telephone techniques, maths and English embedded through snooker, motivation, team work, decision making, time management and many more.

Foundation Learning learners have the opportunity to use NLTG's state of the art Centre of Vocational Excellence in order to gain skills and qualifications in furniture production. They will also have the opportunity to study and gain their CSCS card to enable them to work on a construction site. Within the Vocational Centre of Excellence young people can develop hairdressing and catering skills that allow them to take that first step towards their future career.

Young people on our Foundation Learning programme will have the opportunity to achieve qualifications from City and Guilds in Functional Skills: Maths, English and ICT as well as Employability and Personal Development, Awards in Hairdressing and Introduction to the Hospitality Industry. From Edexcel, we are offering the BTEC in Work Skills and the BTEC in Sports and Active Leisure.

The objective of the Foundation Learning programme is to place young people into employment, Apprenticeships or further education. Once NLTG have established that the young person is ‘work ready', they will use one of its 3000+ companies to place the young person either to try out a particular trade or for full time employment.

The young person will be supported throughout the training by their personal Keyworker who will guide them towards full time employment with training and, thereafter, a possible Apprenticeship.

We have Foundation Learning centres in Accrington, Oldham, Preston, Fleetwood and Blackpool.
