Case Study - Cavan Mulkerrin

Cavan Mulkerrin was one of the first young people who started on the Foundation Learning Programme in August 2010.

Cavan has completed both the Awards and Certificates in Employability and Personal Development and Workskills. Cavan has also completed his ICT Functional Skill, Edexcel Sports Award, CSCS, First Aid and Adult Literacy and Numeracy. He is awaiting results from his English Functional Skills test.

Cavan completed an eight week placement at IPEC furniture within the wood machining department and he is hoping to progress onto an Apprenticeship within this industry.

Cavan is a very lively, confident young person; he has a positive attitude and lifts the moral of other learners within the centre.

Cavan wrote a statement about his time on Foundation Learning, ‘’ North Lancs have helped me to develop myself in such a way that I have developed my character to a more mature and responsible human being. Whilst on programme, I have achieved 11 qualifications. I learnt the importance of working life during my time on work placement.

I have had a great deal of help from my Keyworker, Becci, I couldn’t have done it without this support. I am hoping to get a full time Apprenticeship as I have now completed Foundation Learning.'

Cavan attended an interview for a furniture assembly vacancy at GM Fitted Furniture and was successful! He has now started his Apprenticeship there and he will complete a Step Up Health and Safety course beforehand.

Congratulations to Cavan who, in January 2012, was awarded a City and Guilds Medal of Excellence.
