For a period of five months during 2011, I taught Anthony on our Functional English and maths courses as part of his Foundation Learning programme. Anthony, at first, was a very quiet individual and it became very apparent that he had become disengaged from English and maths during his limited time at school.
During the first couple of lessons, Anthony started somewhat slowly but was beginning to enjoy the group interaction, the feedback in his activity diary and the quality of his work suggested that Anthony’s skills were improving significantly.
Approximately halfway through his learning, Anthony fell on some hard times regarding his housing situation and this visibly started to affect him and his attitudes towards his work. It would have been perfectly understandable if Anthony were to become disengaged again given his very difficult personal situation.
Not Anthony. With the unwavering support of his Foundation Learning Keyworker, Laila Sooky, and with some real grit and determination, Anthony never missed an English and maths lesson and was able to achieve both qualifications. Both of Anthony’s achievements are a testament to his true personality and character and he is a shining example of what can be achieved through sheer commitment and a willingness to want to achieve, regardless of what trials and tribulations life throws at us! Well done Mr. Lewis.
Anthony is now employed as a waiter at Tiffany’s Hotel in Blackpool, a role he is thoroughly enjoying.
