2009 Young Citizen Award from the High Sheriff of Lancashire

For the second year in a row, NLTG has successfully nominated an e2e learner through to the High Sheriff of Lancashire's Young Citizen Award.  This year's finalist, Jonathan Collins of Accrington, successfully completed his e2e programme, which included additional voluntary work at Maundy Grange.  Maundy Grange is a valued local charity that helps a wide range of individuals with personal issues, with founder Dorothy McGregor at its helm.  Dorothy has allowed many of our e2e learners to carry out a range of voluntary jobs at Maundy including helping in one of the shops, gardening, paining and flagging.

Jonathan loved his time so much at Maundy that he progressed to become a permanent volunteer, which has enabled him to continue growing in confidence and self esteem.  Jonathan is a gentle giant who has a big heart and always puts others before himself.

Diane, who co-ordinates the volunteering project, stated, "At NLTG we are all very proud of our learners and have encouraged over 140  learners from the different centres to take up the challenge and put something back into their local community, for no reward or payment.  It is very humbling to see the hard work, time and dedication the e2e learners freely put into volunteering and I would like to thank the many charities and community projects for allowing our learners to fulfil these fantastic volunteering projects."

Jonathan was one of only fifteen young people who received a ‘Commended' for the 2009 Young Citizen Award from the High Sheriff of Lancashire.

A fantastic surprise on the evening was the "Highly Commended" issued to Rob Flanagan, the Hyndburn Youth Partnerships Officer, for all his work at Cue Masters for the Paul Hunter Foundation.

Our previous Young Citizen Award finalist, Jemma Jackson, helped out at White Ash School prior to being taken on as a teaching assistant.  Jemma supports pupils' learning through physical activities.
